Hello
For multigrade printing, I’m currently using an old red bulb, the sort that used to be used for orthochromatic films.
I’ve now managed to get hold of a Durst Tricolor with orange, yellow-green and ‘Colour’ bulbs. Does anyone know which of these colours work for multigrade printing? – based on initial tests, orange clearly doesn’t... :(
Best regards

Hi Klaus,
Not all multigrade papers are the same, and an orange filter (which is actually fine for many types of paper) may also have faded over time.
It’s better to buy new duka filters; I use the basic Kaiser lamps – they’re cheap, and with one orange and one red, you’re sorted for (almost?) everything.

For black-and-white photography, I use red LED lighting, which means I can actually read the Duka newspaper quite comfortably whilst waiting for long exposures. For colour photography, I once made a lamp out of yellow LEDs and fitted a cut-off filter in front of it that only lets 589 nm through. It was expensive, but now the colour Duka is reasonably bright.
Downside: that light makes you feel queasy very quickly... That’s why I’m actually considering an IR system for colour work (which will become more important in future). Mirko, where can you get the ‘goggles’ cheaply? The military ones aren’t much use.
Best regards,
Franz
