Hello, A friend found a roll of 120 film in a roll film camera: reddish paper, a green seal with "Perutz 17" printed on it. It’s 40 ASA film. What on earth is this? Perutz ‘green seal’ colour film? On the other hand, I’ve read online that people have developed this film in Rodinal – or would that be cross-processing? Does anyone know any more about it? We might just try developing the film ourselves or having it developed; it’s certainly worth the risk. berferd

Until 1945, Perutz, Agfa and ADOX were more or less on a par with their ‘high-speed’ 40 ASA films. The film will behave similarly to an Isopan or ADOX R17. I would develop it using a neutral density (ATOMAL 1+1) for about 5–6 minutes, but no longer. If necessary, print onto a harder paper. Good luck! Mirko

...as the Perutz boxes usually contained Agfa film, I’d guess that a 40 ASA film would be Agfa Isopan IF. According to an old data sheet, the following development times apply in Rodinal for a gamma of around 0.7: 1+25: 4–5 mins 1+50: 8–10 min 1+75 14–18 min If I were you, I’d tend to go by the longer times, or add a minute or two depending on the dilution.

Wolf, The film has a 40-year-old emulsion. If it’s developed for too long, the base fog will bleed into the shadows and mid-tones. I’d develop it just enough and then push it or make a hard print. Best regards, Mirko

...I reckon – assuming it really is Isopan iF – that the base fog isn’t a problem, because the less sensitive the film, the less of an issue the base fog is. I still have 15 rolls of Isopan IF – expiry date Jan. 1978 – which still produce flawless results. Only the speed has suffered somewhat over time – I reckon the film still works at around 25 ASA. Hence my recommendation to develop it for a little longer. Furthermore, the longer development time ensures greater contrast – which is certainly an advantage, at least for films that have been sitting undeveloped in the camera for years... Hi everyone, Just a quick update: I developed it with Rodinal 1:50 for 10 minutes at 20 degrees – unfortunately, the film is completely black; there’s absolutely nothing to be seen. A shame, but it was worth a try – who knows how the film had been stored. On the other hand, it worked brilliantly two weeks ago with a Fortepan 200 (with exposure about 14 years ago!), and prints up well (developed exactly as above). Interesting, by the way: the emulsion side is grey (as you’d expect from a b/w film), the backing side (before development... seen on the scrap that was still stuck to the paper) is dark green – I’ve never seen anything like that before!
