That essentially depends on what you want to measure and how. For still photography, you might find a few pages from "Gerhard Graeb, Didaktik der Fotografie, Don Bosco Verlag Munich, ISBN: 3 7698 0299-3" quite interesting. Best regards, Franz

And of course, it depends on how much you want to/can spend. Normally, a light meter that can measure both light and subject exposure is sufficient. If you also want to use film cameras, it should have a cine scale. Regards, Uwe

...and if you want to use it for flash photography as well, it obviously needs to be capable of flash exposure metering. I have a Gossen Variosix F2 for this; it’s not exactly cheap, but you can sometimes find it second-hand. It does everything, and with a spot attachment (optional accessory) it can also do spot metering. Gossen also make smaller, cheaper models, though. Generally speaking, I’d tend to buy a brand-name model like Sekonic or Gossen (or the Walimex models manufactured by Gossen). Regards Hendrik
