Hello,
I’ve taken on a large quantity of ADOX CHM 125 and CHM 400 from a friend; the best-before dates on the 125s expired three years ago and on the 400s a year ago. The films were stored in a warm place (a living room cupboard), and many of the tins appear to have been opened before.
- How should/must this be taken into account during exposure and development?
(What is actually the best all-purpose developer for these types? I’ve never developed them myself...)
- Should I expect a noticeable loss of quality?
- How should I store the films from now on? It’ll take me at least a year to get through this pile...
I reckon, as the canisters may have been opened and could now contain moisture, freezing them wouldn’t be such a good idea, would it? The fridge?
Best regards, Immo
Hi Immo,
I’d say three years isn’t too bad. If it’s a large quantity, just take a 125 and a 400, take a few shots, develop the films according to the standard instructions and see if there’s any loss of quality. I don’t think so. The CHMs are Ilford FP4 and HP5 (?!), and standard developers like Ilford ID-11 are pretty forgiving. For further storage, just freeze them. Even with films in their original packaging, condensation can form when you defrost them, so just wait a day until they’ve acclimatised.
Regards, Sven.
