Hello As well as the R09, I’ve been experimenting more with the ADX 2-component developer and I’m actually delighted with the results I’ve achieved with all the films I use (Rollei Retro 100, Neopan 400, CHS 100 and CHS 50). With the CHS 50 – and only with this film, and exclusively during development in ADX – the normally transparent base remains completely cloudy with a magenta cast, whilst the actual negative tends to remain greenish. I should point out that this cloudiness has no effect on printability. The positives come out balanced and with good sharpness. But I’m wondering whether this is simply how it is, or whether I’ve made a mistake. Please let me know if this phenomenon is well-known. Regards Gilbert

Hello. As far as I know, the ADX is manufactured by Schain. In connection with other Schain developers, there have been reports of dichroic fog (i.e. silver released during development that is redeposited on the film as a diffuse fog) in relation to certain batches of film. What does the ‘haze’ look like? Does it tend to shimmer when light reflects off the film surface? – That would point to this phenomenon. In this case, it wasn’t a matter of incorrect use, but rather that the developer simply ‘doesn’t work’ with this film (or, more specifically, with this batch). Georg

What does the “haze” look like? Does it tend to shimmer when light reflects off the film surface? – That would point to this phenomenon. In this case, it wasn’t a user error, but rather the developer simply “can’t” handle this film (or at least not this batch).

Thanks Georg It’s unclear whether it shimmers; at least the film doesn’t produce a “bell curve”. But I assume you’re right in your assumption. I’ve since carried out two more density tests and had to more than double the specified development time before I got anywhere near a gamma of 0.6. It’s a shame; I wanted to apply the results to my newly arrived 4x5 sheet films. But I’ll test those with R09 now. Better safe than sorry. Many thanks for your reply. Gilbert
