Cut it straight across, then round off the corners slightly; if the film is still relatively fresh off the 30-metre reel, I can practically just slide it in... otherwise there is indeed a trick to it, which is terribly simple – perhaps it helps to have a look at the reel... so: the reel has a bit of ‘play’ within which it moves back and forth. One finger always holds the film in place, whilst the other lets it run.

I’d always actually thought it was completely taboo to touch the film in any way, and that it would wind itself on automatically by moving the two sides of the reel back and forth.
Of course, it works perfectly fine if you do touch it.
