Problem when winding a KB film

Hello. I recently bought a Jobo Unitank 1500 at a bargain price on eBay. It’s just arrived and I’ve just tried winding it up in daylight using some expired DM transparency, but for the life of me I can’t get it to work. Is there a trick to it? Instead of winding up, the film unwinds and comes back towards me. I’m on the verge of complete despair B)

Cut it straight across, then round off the corners slightly; if the film is still relatively fresh off the 30-metre reel, I can practically just slide it in... otherwise there is indeed a trick to it, which is terribly simple – perhaps it helps to have a look at the reel... so: the reel has a ‘play’ within which it moves back and forth. You always hold the film in place with one finger, whilst the other lets it run.

Right, thanks namir. I’d always actually thought it was completely taboo to touch the film in any way, and that it would wind itself on automatically by moving the two sides of the reel back and forth. Of course, it works perfectly fine if you do touch it.

I’d always thought it was completely off-limits to touch the film in any way, and that it would automatically wind itself as the two sides of the reel moved back and forth. Of course, touching it works perfectly fine.

With the AP / Paterson reels, that’s indeed how it works, but from my own experience I can say that the Jobo reels are less prone to ‘jamming’ than the ones just mentioned. (You’d be cursing it from the darkroom...) It’s great that we’ve solved a problem here again by joining forces!
