Hello,
I have an unopened bottle of Spur Ultrafix from last year, and the liquid has turned yellow and there are deposits visible at the bottom.
Is the fixer a write-off?
Bonderer
There’s nothing on the bottle – no batch number, use-by date or anything like that? I’d ask the manufacturer about it, as they’ll have tested it. So they must be able to say something about it. Personally, I only use products that state the production date, batch number or use-by date. ADOX does the same, after all.
If something’s past its sell-by date and has gone off on me, that’s my risk – I’ll decide. But it saves me from ending up with some ancient stock that’s been sitting around for ages. Unfortunately, that’s happened to me a few times in the past. I wouldn’t want to use it for film, though, but I would for paper.
Negatives are irretrievably lost; photos can be recreated.

Nah, no batch number.
Before I go and fill the new NOVA print processor with useless chemicals, I’d rather just bin them.
I was just planning to pop into the darkroom this weekend, but that’s not going to happen now.

Why don't you just test the fixer with a piece of film?

I’ve decided that from now on, the fixer will only be available as a powder; I’ve already ordered it.
Thanks to everyone.

The yellow deposits are probably sulphur. That means the fixer is ready for the bin.

Powder goes off over time too. That’s why I advise against stocking up too much.
