Hello,
I’m hoping to get a bit closer to my goal.
I’m looking for a 400 film with characteristics similar to FP4+ – does such a thing exist?
I usually perform exposure on FP4+ according to the standard, but in harsh light I develop it to compensate and sometimes even lower the ISO to 50.
Tri-X and Tmax400, with push and pull, in D-76, Rodinal (not great  ) or Speed Major, don’t quite cut it.
They just keep going in the highlights, so to speak, whereas the FP4+ levels off there.
Is there ‘something like that’ with a bit more speed?
Oh, and by the way, I’m talking about 35mm film.

Hello,
400-speed films generally have a higher silver content in the coated layer. That’s why the flattening effect only occurs at higher densities than with 100-speed films. In my experience, the film with the thinnest coated layer is the FomaPan 400. You might get lucky with that one. You could also overexpose the 400-speed film so that the highlights shift into the saturation range. That would also result in a flattening of the curve.
Best regards,

Hello,
I completely forgot that the FomaPan 400 unfortunately doesn’t reach 400 ISO. It only manages 200 ISO at best, and you can achieve that with the FP4 and the Wehner developer as well. That also helps to balance things out a bit. I’ll have to check again in my tests to see if that helps with the genuine 400 films too. Personally, I’m a fan of straight blackening curves.
Best regards,

Hello,
I’ve had a bit on my plate over the last few days.
I think I’ll get hold of a few rolls of 400 film and give them a go.
