Dear glossy finish enthusiasts,
After finding a brand-new Bäcker Baryt press
under the Christmas tree, and given that there had always been piles of hardboard lying around the flat,
I got hold of some Doran glossy finish sheets here at home and set about
drying them off in no time at all......well,
I’ve read the various threads on this, here and in other forums.......
I’ve experimented with temperature, spirit, stabiliser, rolling up tightly or loosely... etc.
but ALL the papers stick to the high-gloss film! Mercilessly...

Drying against the cloth is no problem, but I want a high-gloss finish.
Could it be because I’m using the small Doran sheets (30x40) on
the 50x60 Bäcker frame, so the tension/curvature isn’t right?
(They cost just a third of the price of the Bäcker sheets)
I’d really appreciate any tips
Regards
Marc

Hi Marc,
I witnessed a fairly extensive test run at a friend’s place. We achieved reasonably good results with a cap bath and a bath in Edwal-Superflat. And – crucially – it took a very long time for the papers to peel away from the film. Before that, they were stuck fast, but after 40–50 minutes, the crackling sound so often described occurred and the sheet came away from the film almost spot-free (and without any curling), the film having previously been treated with a very expensive car polish (containing diamond abrasives). The temperature was relatively low (around 40°C).
I don’t think the result (still a few isolated specks) is worth the effort, so I’ll carry on drying against the cloth...
Swinging regards
Henning

Hi Henning,
Thanks for your reply – I’ll give Hüter a go
and, above all, just wait a bit longer at 40 degrees. The paper did feel dry
after 15 minutes at that temperature.
I’ve already read about the effort involved and, ‘luckily’, I’m not the only one in this boat
So, carry on
Regards
Marc
