Does anyone know if there’s a workshop on historical processes taking place anywhere in Germany this year? I was thinking along the lines of wet plate, tintype, calotype... Thanks for any tips! Philipp

Hello! Yes, this year and somewhere in Germany too! If you’re interested, please get in touch soon! I’m running a course on the ‘wet collodion process’ on 11–12 December. After that, probably not until 2011, but that’s too late... Ambrotypes (instant positives) and negatives on glass. The process, published by Scott Archer in 1851, was a milestone in the 19th century, as it combined fine detail with simple reproduction at a manageable effort (and cost). See: www.janvogtschmidt.de

Hello Philipp, Although your enquiry is already over two years old, perhaps this tip will still be of some help: In the week after Easter, Jan Eric Euler is running a two-day course on the wet collodion process at the Lette Academy of Design. Thursday 12 April and Friday 13 April 2012, 9.30 am to 4.30 pm each day; course fee €240, including materials. Over the two days, you will learn the basics of this historic process step by step, from purchasing and processing the chemicals and glass, through technical tips for photography and development, right up to the final sealing of the glass plate.
