Hello, I developed some Kodak Tri-X medium format film today and noticed the following: One roll I developed with D76 (mixed yesterday) at a ratio of 1+1. The other I developed with Rodinal at a ratio of 1+25. Interestingly, when I poured out the Rodinal, a purple liquid came out of the developer bottle. Was the D76 solution clear when poured out? The negatives developed with D76 have a purple tint, whilst those developed with Rodinal are clear and colourless. How come? Do you have any idea? I’m curious to see what the pictures look like once I’ve scanned the negatives. Thanks and best regards, Martin

Hi Martin, That’s the antihalation. With Rodinal, it simply washes out, whereas with D76 it remains in the film and should be bleached and dissolved during fixing. What kind of fixer are you using, as the films are still purple afterwards? Best regards, Franz

...nine minutes for fixing seems to me to be considerably excessive – with fresh fixer, anything longer than two or three minutes isn’t really necessary. Only flat-crystal films, such as Kodak’s T-Max or Ilford’s Delta, require longer fixing times. To completely remove the antihalation, you don’t need to fix the film again – it’s enough to expose it to the sun for a while. Otherwise, I’ve had the best results with the Ilford rinsing method when it comes to removing antihalation – even the most stubborn antihalation is no match for this method...

The pink tinge that remains on some films after fixing can be reliably removed by soaking them in a rinsing aid (e.g. from Moersch). I don’t think it makes sense to fix them for longer than necessary. Best regards, Klaus

Hello, all three of you, Yes, you can fix it again. Yes, you can also do this using a different fixer (I, for example, use Amaloco X55). And as Wolf and Klaus have already said, there are simpler solutions. A basic wetting agent or – very simple at the moment – the classic sunbathing by the south-facing window. Best regards, Franz

D76/ID11 vs. Rodinal with TriX Dear photography enthusiasts; I actually just stumbled across this article, which is why I’ve signed up to the forum. - My brother and I have been using TriX for a very long time, about 25 years, and can’t praise it highly enough! Because it’s not just ‘fast’, it also appears to be extremely rich in silver and therefore full of nuances! As fine grain enthusiasts, we have always developed it exclusively in Microdol-X, as specified there, perhaps for half a minute longer. Warmer development seems to produce an even softer and more gradual negative curve; in other words, develop at 24–25°C rather than just 20–21°C – whilst adjusting the development time. Rodinal and D76/ID11: In my opinion, these are very different types of developer; we are familiar with both. Rodinal is like HC 110, an all-rounder you can’t go wrong with, which has a shelf life of over 20 years – and would probably still produce good results on Mars, though not the best! - D76/ID11 belongs more to the specific group of fine grain developers. However, there are always – surprising – exceptions. Following an ancient test, we developed many rolls of the then-current Panatomic-X (Kodak, 16 DIN, black-and-white film) in Rodinal; and this combination really did deliver very good results. Later, however, we switched to the ‘original’ combination of Panatomic and Microdol. Plus-X worked well with D76/ID11; not so much with Rodinal. Today, for example, I develop the wonderful Plus-X exclusively in Microdol, following the instructions. I would never develop a TriX with Rodinal, however, as our observations suggest this combination is not suitable. Generally speaking, our observation was actually this: when it comes to films and/or developers, there are only ‘trends’; but there are very good combinations of very specific films in very specific developers.
