Clean developer spindles?

Ich habe gebraucht ein paar Jobo Tanks samt Spindeln erstanden und musste feststellen, dass diese an etlichen Stellen mit einem grauen Belag überzogen sind....

I recently bought a few Jobo tanks, complete with spindles, and noticed that they are covered in a grey film in several places. As I’m not familiar with this sort of film from my black-and-white processes, and it’s clearly not just a bit of lint, I assume that the previous owner wasn’t too fussy about cleanliness after developing colour films. So here’s the question: how do I get rid of this coating? It can be wiped off with some effort, but especially in the spindle assemblies, it’s a tedious and unpleasant task that I’d rather avoid. So far, I’ve tried Kukident (dental cleaning tablets), ethanol, vinegar essence and Fit-Wasser – without any significant success. Do you have any suggestions? Best wishes & have a relaxing weekend! If it doesn’t come off with Kukident (soaked overnight in warm water), then I don’t think the coating should have any effect even after 10 minutes’ contact with a developer at 20°C...

Hi! What’s ‘Fit-Wasser’? Some esoteric stuff from the health food shop? Otherwise, I’d recommend the classic Farmer’s diluent, e.g. SPUR liquid Farmer 1+1+8. I’ve got a few bottles of the stuff myself; it doesn’t cause any issues during development, and it hasn’t done any harm so far. Bye Frank

A gap in my knowledge! Fit is the washing-up liquid of the East, and I even use it (the green one without any fragrance) as a substitute for wetting agent when I run out of wetting agent concentrate. Fit is now available in the old federal states too. Martin

Hello Martin, However, the ‘post-reunification Fit’ no longer shares one key feature with the original product: the GDR product was yellow. The post-reunification version is, however, also usable in forensic science (as a luminol enhancer). It’s worth noting that in the “new” federal states, “Fit” is a generic term for washing-up liquid, just as “Pril” is in the “old” federal states. Best regards, Franz

Well, one person comes out as an “Ossi” and the other as a “Wessi” in the blink of an eye ;-) And I have to admit that I, too, use the term now and then as a synonym for “washing-up liquid”. But back to the topic of dirty dishes: I’ve now had quite a bit of success with a Kukident treatment lasting several hours, followed by a scrub with an old toothbrush. There are still one or two stains here and there, but overall the spindle is already looking a bit more reassuring... Sunny greetings from the East, Stefan

For anyone who’s interested: Schlecker currently has FIT on offer, at least here in the Hanover area. And if it just doesn’t seem to work as a dishwashing liquid substitute, you can always use it to get the crockery clean... Martin
