Hello I’d like to make black-and-white negatives from some of my colour slides and am looking for a suitable slide duplicator. I use a Nikon camera and do NOT have a flash. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice? Wilfried

Wilfried, We have a slide duplicator for sale which, as far as I know, has a Nikon bayonet mount. It can be used with a flash or, alternatively, with a halogen lamp. We’re asking €200, as a lens is also included. Best regards, Mirko

Hello Wilfried, - or use an enlarger to project directly onto the 35mm film canister at a 1:1 scale (without a camera lens) - or, if you’re not too fussy, project the slide onto a screen and photograph it from there - some people can still do contact copying In all cases, the film must be developed using a soft process. Mirko, What sort of device is that? Do you have a description of it so I can get an idea? Another question: do you always need a matching lens? I’ve heard of extension rings that you screw onto the lens, but I can’t really imagine that working. The reproduction should be good enough that I’d feel confident making a 24x30 or 30x40 print and hanging it on the wall.

Hello Wilfried, The device is, of course, a bit older but in working order. It will exceed your expectations. Something like this originally cost 4,000 DM. We don’t have a manual, but we’d be happy to let you have a look at it. However, it would be unfair to duplicate the entire collection and then send it back – so I’d like to limit the viewing period to one week. Would that be alright? Best regards, Mirko

Hello Mirko, That arrangement is fine, but I would ask that you or someone else from FOTOIMPEX explain to me how to use it. I’ve never worked with a camera like this before and don’t want to figure it out by trial and error: aperture, exposure metering, focusing, which film to use and how to develop it. Perhaps there’s a description online somewhere. Another question: before they run out, I wanted to order a larger quantity of Classic Pan 200 KB (my favourite film in D76 for all reportage-style work) (100–150), but I’ve run out of space in the fridge. Could I buy and pay for them and you send them in the autumn, when my cellar is cool again? Regards Wilfried

Hello Wilfried, Unfortunately, we are unable to provide instructions in the format you requested. However, there is an exposure chart printed on the slides which specifies a correction factor depending on the distance (for cropped sections). The standard aperture is probably f/8. In theory, with the standard aperture and a well-exposed slide, you should always achieve good exposure on 64 ASA film (that was the speed of the slide reproduction films). However, I would always recommend taking a short exposure bracketing series. Unfortunately, the employee who operated this machine for us in the 1990s no longer works for FOTOIMPEX. ClassicPan 200: simply order via ‘info’ with the specifications. Best regards, Mirko

Right, Mirko, which film should I use then? APX 100, Pan F or even Pan 25? I’d like to give that a go. I’ve got some APX 100 (and one roll of CHS 50), so I’ll measure it out. Wilfried

It doesn’t really matter, as you can adjust the aperture. I wouldn’t go above 100 ISO, as colour slide films can have a very fine grain. Here’s a picture of the camera. Best regards, Mirko [ATTACHMENT NOT FOUND]
