In addition to its now traditional one-year introductory course in digital photography, the Photography Department at the Berufsfachschule für Design am Lette - Verein (www.lette-verein.de) will also be offering a two-part course focusing on analogue black-and-white photography from September 2009:
F 02 Introductory Course in Black-and-White Photography.
Over six Saturdays, participants will learn the creative and technical fundamentals of analogue black-and-white black-and-white photography will be explored in theory and practice.
Composition, mastering your own camera, an introduction to film development and enlargements in the darkroom are the topics this basic course will cover.

Time: Saturdays, 9 am – 2 pm

Prerequisites: none
Duration: 6 sessions totalling 40 teaching hours

F 03 Advanced Course in Black-and-White Photography
Building on the basic course, the following topics in black-and-white photography will be explored in depth, both in theory and practice:
Introduction to the Zone System, calibration of photographic materials,
tone control using filters, advanced darkroom techniques and toning.

Start date: February 2010
Number of participants: 12–14
Prerequisites: Completion of the F 02 basic course
or equivalent knowledge
Duration: 6 sessions totalling 40 contact hours

Hello Klaus,
At yesterday’s second session, 16 participants of (almost) all ages developed their first black-and-white film themselves and have already made contact prints.
Next time, we’ll be tackling the first enlargements........

Good news!
In Paderborn, I’ve now been running a (traditional!) black-and-white photography course continuously for over a year.
It’s still going strong – and there are already new people showing interest – young people coming from a background in digital photography.
I get the impression things are slowly starting to pick up again – which is exactly what I always expected!
We’re currently preparing the fineartforum in Paderborn – and we’re getting a pleasing amount of positive feedback.
