Tell me, Franz
Did the leather covering go well? If I’ve understood correctly, the pieces are cut to size individually; you just peel them off and stick them on, right?
Regards, Sven.
Hi Sven,
Yes, it went brilliantly. The pieces are cut to size and are simply stuck on.
However, there are a few things to bear in mind when removing the Vulcanite. As described in the instructions, it doesn’t really work... You practically can’t get the stuff off without leaving any residue.
That’s why it’s better to remove the body from the camera (with my MD-2 that was trivial, with the M4-2 almost trivial; the bayonet can stay on, just the top and bottom screws need removing).
Then you can heat the Vulcanite up nicely with a hairdryer and remove it easily. Afterwards, I removed the residue with nitro thinner (this is why you need to remove the body: the camera doesn’t like either the heat or the solvent, which really runs everywhere) and applied leather. Reassemble in the reverse order.
Caution: The stuff sticks immediately! That’s why I rubbed a thin layer of nitro dilution onto the body before gluing; that way, you can at least make a few adjustments. Start applying the leather on the bayonet side and put the base cover on first; this ensures a straight edge along the length as well.
Best regards,
Franz
