I’m familiar with the sort without a timer—those hot car flash units, or whatever they’re called—which were designed to fit “directly onto the hot wire terminal” (I’ve got one of those lying about at home), and, unless I’m mistaken, they were also made for the hot wire terminal.

My grandfather used to have a device like that, which you could connect to the wire feeder. You set the trigger time on the device and, once activated, it would solder and hold the wire feeder down until the time was up. And it was all mechanical.
