Friends of analogue photography,
A newcomer has a question about ADOX films.
Apparently, Adox films have a very soft surface... meaning they’re prone to scratches!
What can you tell me about this?
A quick word about the newcomer! :(
Having pretty much lost my enthusiasm for analogue photography, I’ve been going ‘back to basics’ for a few weeks now and have stowed the ‘digital’ gear away in the cupboard.
I’ve got myself some analogue gear again (I’ve settled on Olympus), I’m currently testing films, and I’m having a right good time. Development and my own darkroom will follow soon.
So I’ll be pestering you all the time with beginner’s questions!
Cheers, Martin

Hi Martin,
Yes, the CHS is always said to have a sensitive surface. If you handle the film carefully whilst it’s still wet (e.g. don’t use a film scraper, though I wouldn’t do that with any other film either), there shouldn’t be any problems. I haven’t had any so far, at least.
Best regards,
Andreas

Hi Martin,
Comments like that probably come from people whose main job is logging and who have hands to match. All films available today are robust enough for everyday lab use. There’s really no reason to handle a wet film; just use distilled water for the wetting agent bath, hang it up, and you’re done. If there was ever a sensitive film, it was Ektachrome-X (E4 process). You only had to touch it and the top emulsion would stick to your finger.

I use EFKE KB 50, which is identical to Adox CHS.
After the wetting agent bath, I hang up all my films and wipe off the excess water with two wet fingers. So far, I haven’t scratched a single film doing this. Not even an EFKE/ADOX CHS.
Happy shooting!
