Hello everyone! € Sometimes I need something a bit more sensitive, and it occurred to me that there’s still Ilford Delta 3200. I’ve actually got two cassettes of it lying around (still within the best-before date), which I bought back when I was using a commercial lab, but didn’t use after the first roll because the results were disappointing. Now I understand why that was the case. Grain and sharpness weren’t the issue, but the negatives were completely muddy, as if they were underdeveloped. € So here’s my question: I have the Delta 3200 here and Kodak’s HC110 developer to hand. Has anyone had any experience with this? I don’t necessarily need full ISO 3200 speed (I’ve heard that this value is only achieved because Ilford wants the film to be pushed as standard), but ISO 1600 would be nice. So the question is: will I get better results if I perform the development at ISO 1600, or is there not much difference with ISO 3200? € Can I even achieve reasonably decent results with the HC110, or is the developer simply unsuitable for this? € And finally, the question of which is better, in your opinion: Delta 3200 pulled to 1600 or 800, or a pushed HP5+ at ISO 800 or 1600? Both processed with Kodak HC-110. € I know that film development and image quality are very much a matter of taste and can also depend on the finer details of the process, but I’d love to hear about your experiences. € Regards, Christian

Even when developed in HC 110, the Delta 3200 only delivers 1000 ISO. Overall, HC 110 is slightly coarser-grained. Pushed HP5 will also show a coarser grain. It’s a different story if you push 400 Delta. In that case, I don’t see much difference compared to the 3200. Overall, I develop all my Deltas in A49 (I used to develop them in HC 110 as well). Better sensitivity utilisation, finer grain and more pleasing tonal values, which some consider too mushy, but which can be managed well through paper gradation. The same goes for high contrast. Anyone who needs full shadow detail in Zone 1 at 3200 ISO will have to look elsewhere and won’t find it (in analogue). The Delta is probably the only film still available that can be used without any problems at 3200.
