I don’t have any C41 chemicals at home yet, but I found something interesting on Flickr: people have been processing cheap films using black-and-white chemicals and getting decent black-and-white negatives.
I used the cheap Paradies films from DM, 100 and 200 ISO, and the results aren’t bad. However, the base is quite dark and there are some odd colour shifts – it turns blue in the dark, for example.
Does anyone have any tips on how to lighten the dark base? I’m not very familiar with bleaches, so perhaps someone has a few tips for me :)
I’d advise against the cheap Kodak film from Aldi; it develops a golden emulsion layer on the emulsion side and absorbs a lot of light as a result, which is a nuisance when scanning and enlarging.
And before the film purists chime in: yes, I know it’s by no means a substitute for a lovely Neopan or another fine black-and-white film, but it’s fun.
