Hi everyone, I got my Canon EOS today and wanted to shoot a few test rolls straight away to try out a new film-developer combination. When I loaded the film and heard a long whirring noise, I checked the manual again and was horrified to discover that the film is rewound COMPLETELY, meaning the first frame effectively starts at the very end of the roll. This is a nightmare for me, as I often only take a few shots, then cut the streak in the darkroom and perform the development. Is there any way with Canon EOS cameras to just take a streak of 5 shots, remove it, and take more photos on the same roll of film?! I’ve noticed a function called ‘Rewind a partially exposed film’. Could that perhaps work? I can’t find any information anywhere on what this function does or what it’s used for :) It’s a Canon EOS 3000N. Regards Andi

Hi Andi, On my 50E, partial rewinding is called "rewinding a partially exposed film", so you should activate that function. That way, the film tab will stay out too. Best regards, Stähane.

This is only possible with the larger EOS models. The EOS 3000/300/500 always pull the film completely out of the cassette. During exposure, the film is rewound back into the cassette frame by frame. With the EOS 30/50 etc., you can use the custom function to set whether the film should be pulled completely out of the cassette first or frame by frame. Once the film is full, you can also choose whether the film should disappear completely into the cassette or whether the film leader should remain outside. Happy shooting! Volker

Hi Andi, It looks like partial rewinding is a CF function; the button you mentioned is only there to allow you to rewind the film at all before it reaches the end. I’ve bought a film retriever for my darkroom work – you can get them from Impex too – and with that you can at least pull a film tab back out, regardless of what the camera can or can’t do. Hi Stéphane, Yeah, I’ve heard about those film retrievers… but they’re no use to me for just a few test shots :) So I’ll just use the Canon EOS for situations where I know I’ll definitely use up a whole roll of film :) And for short photo series like that, I’ll just use my old SLR. But I still have one question about the EOS cameras: you load the film, pull a streak out to the mark and simply close the door. Then the film is wound out completely whilst counting how many shots can be taken. Does the camera leave a safety margin from the already exposed start?! I mean, can I take the last photo with a clear conscience, or could it turn out completely black?! Regards Andi

Oh hi, Andi! That’s one of the reasons I snapped up a 50E on eBay; the 40 quid was money well spent. You definitely don’t need to worry about the ‘last shot’ – the unexposed strip is a good 19cm long. But just to make it absolutely clear: you don’t need the 3000 for partial exposure (you’d have to stick the end of the film back onto the reel every time, haha...) Good light Frank

But with some other EOS cameras, it is sometimes as you described, at least with the low-budget models (the ones with 3- or 4-digit model numbers). Best regards, Stähane

Exactly. As far as I know, this was introduced with the EOS 500N. Reason: accidentally opened rear covers don’t affect the already exposed shots. Why don’t you buy an EOS 3 or EOS 1? You can get them for as little as 150 euros. And the reels a) are the ‘right’ way round and b) have the CF function for the protruding film tab after rewinding.

Because I already have a kit with loads of lenses and several cameras, as well as other accessories. However, it’s all Pentax equipment. And as a student, you can’t exactly just go and buy an EOS 1 and equivalent lenses on the side :( The Canon was really intended for party photos and situations where I can’t carry much with me -> built-in flash (it goes quite a long way with 400-speed film). Plus, the camera only cost 15 euros :) I’ve got a 35–105mm Canon autofocus lens to go with it, and that’s enough for run-of-the-mill snaps :lol: Normally, I use my other cameras. I’ve got lenses with apertures from f/1.4 and telephoto lenses up to 420mm, plus all sorts of bits and bobs in between B) And I think I’ve got that CF function where the tab stays on the outside too. Anyway, there’s talk of some sort of function involving partially exposed film (whatever that’s supposed to be). Cheers Andi
