Hello! I’m looking for a table showing the colour values for the various multigrade filter grades, specifically for the Durst M605 colour head. I found a table in the instructions for Ilford Multigrade paper. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s suitable for my Durst enlarger. When printing, for example, grade 4 still looks quite low in contrast. Is there perhaps a decent table for this somewhere? Perhaps even one that takes into account the extended exposure times for the different gradation grades? Regards, Max

If the contrast is still too low, either your filters have faded, the paper is finished, or your negatives are too flat. In the first and last cases, using multigrade filters in the filter drawer or under the lens helps. If the paper is finished, nothing helps except new paper. Regards, Uwe

I have a Durst M 601, which is probably the same. 0 is special 30 is normal 60 is hard 90 is extra-hard 130 isn’t much harder either This is roughly correct for Foma Variant and Kodak Polymax. I practically never need yellow filtration (even softer). If you always end up above 50, you need to adjust your negative processing. Too harsh a filter setting costs you in grey tones.

Hi Max, Just so you know, all these tables only give you rough guidelines. You can’t avoid having to test it out for yourself. It always depends on the paper you’re using, how old your filters are, and how old the bulbs in your enlarger are. So if 4 is too soft, turn up the magenta. With most colour enlargers, you won’t reach 5 anyway; at the end of the magenta wheel, you’ll find 4 or 4.5.... And as for the times, I now allow myself the luxury of measuring them out. I look at a print to see what bothers me and then do a bit of fine-tuning until it looks the way I want it to. Regards, Sven.

Hello, Calibrating the printer can be very time-consuming and a bit complicated. But once you’ve got it sorted, working with these tables is all the more enjoyable! I actually calibrate the magenta and yellow channels for a consistent exposure time. The only annoying thing is when the paper suddenly disappears from the market. Best regards, Renate
