Hello everyone,
I’ve finally plucked up the courage to try the enlargement of colour negatives, but I’m still struggling with the colour filtering (there’s always a red cast). I’ve made at least 30 prints of one photo using a wide range of filter values, but none of them were free of a red cast.
So here’s my question: can you give me some tips online on how to get started,
or is there perhaps someone living in Wuppertal or the surrounding area who could
show me how colour filtering works?
Thanks in advance
Kind regards, J. Fichthorn

Erwin,
Are you using a Superstabibad OR would you be happy with at least 36 degrees?
It could be that you still have some BX residue on your prints.

Hello Mirko,
First of all, thank you for your reply. I tried again, but it turned red again.
Could it be because I’m using an out-of-date bleach-fixer?

Are the colours in the images also reddish, or is white still white and only the colours are shifted?

The image borders are white, but the image itself is completely red.

Hi Justus,
Do you work under studio lighting, e.g. Duka 50, or in the dark?

Hello,
I’m using the Jobo Minilux. But that can’t be the cause, as the unexposed wheels are a normal white and it’s only the photo that has a red tint.

The lab light causes a blue fog.
The reverse conclusion (i.e. if the wheels are white, the light is OK) is incorrect and has misled many people, because the wheels are covered by the mask frame for a prolonged period and it is quite possible that this fogs the actual image but not the wheels, particularly if the light is positioned closer to the enlarger than to the trays.
This may well be the crux of the matter, because if you try to ‘filter out’ a blue cast caused by the lab light, everything shifts to the complementary colour.
Otherwise, I would try to get a blank sheet to turn grey in complete darkness and check all my work steps.
Of course, follow all the basic rules, such as exposure for at least 10 seconds, etc. (use an ADOX grey filter if necessary).
Best regards,
Mirko

Hello Justus, I replied to you and offered to give you a demonstration in my photo lab, but after that you suddenly went quiet. What am I to make of that?

Hi Dieter,
I actually sent you a message saying that I’d like to accept your offer; I’m sorry if you didn’t receive it.
Kind regards, Justus

Hello
I hope my English is alright. (I can read German fine, but I’m rubbish at writing it)
I had the same problem when I started colour printing; no matter what I did (filtration, temperature, etc.), the prints came out red. I eventually realised that the lamp in the enlarger wasn’t positioned correctly but was tilted slightly upwards, so too much light was passing over the filters. Once I put it back in place, the problem was solved.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I’ll give it a go over the next few days.
