Hi everyone, You’ve got a great forum here! At the risk of revealing my own ignorance, I’d like to ask for some help: I need a black-and-white film (35mm) with the following characteristics for producing projection scales using photographic methods: - A crystal-clear, uncoloured base after standard negative development and fixing. Grey or grey-blue bases (I’ve tried Delta 100 and PanF+) absorb too much light during projection. - Very fine grain or high resolution (at least 200 lines per mm). The Delta 100 just about worked, but it could be better. - High contrast/sharp, I really only need white lines on a black background. So basically a high-resolution lith film in 35mm format. Speed and spectral characteristics are almost irrelevant; I can work with plenty of light when shooting and perform unlimited exposures. There is no positive process; the negative is the final product. It would be great if someone would reply: “Then why not buy the So-and-so XYZ from Such-and-such Ltd.” Best regards from Cardiff, Wales, Thomas.

Have a word with Franz-Josef Heinen. If I remember correctly, his contact details are www.labordienst.com. Don’t be put off by the website. The man runs a side business—not for public consumption—dealing in films, lab equipment and all sorts of things. Mainly government clients of various origins (a supplier of instant film developers, for example). And a magnificent range of specialist films, tailor-made for your applications. Customers looking for standard products are better served elsewhere (e.g. here!). In the consumer film sector, you can get the Efke/ADOX R50, amongst others, to come out *very* clear from the process. Presumably the new ADOX products too; Mirko might be able to say something about that. I haven’t opened my new ADOX films yet. Best regards, Franz

I can confirm that... I happen to have one left to develop here, so I might be able to send you a snippet (clear after development), otherwise I’d try the MACO ORT25, or go straight for a lith film for the printing industry. As for lith films for the printing industry, they can be processed in black-and-white positive chemistry under red light. I use something like this to test my restored cameras for light-tightness; you simply cut streaks and insert them into the camera under red light, wind the film, and then take one shot...
