JUTTA
Hello everyone,
I’m interested in ADOX Display Film, as I have a few slides (6x7) that I’d like to enlarge onto Display Film. I’m hoping to produce a few Van Dykes.
Problem: Unfortunately, I’ve only found ADOX Display Film up to 8x10" in the catalogue.
Is it available in larger formats as well? E.g. 30x40? :)
Has anyone tried this film before?
Best wishes from the Black Forest

Hi Jutta,
ADOX Displayfilm is similar to Maco GPF – a halftone film, or rather a paper emulsion on a clear base. It’s red-blind, so it needs to be processed just like paper in the darkroom.
It’s quite easy to work with, but it has a high contrast, which means you need to control it during development.
With cyanotypes, I sometimes wish for a flatter curve (more Dmax without it breaking up), but it works great for Kallis, and Van Dykes are very similar in that respect.
The GPF used to be available in a larger size, though I must admit I’m not entirely sure what’s still available or in what form.
Best regards
Martin

Hi Martin,
Thanks in advance for the Maco tip!
Yes, the Maco GPF is actually available in rolls or in sizes up to 50x60 from a Swiss supplier!
I had a quick Google :D
Well, I reckon, as I’m ordering a few things from Mirco soon, I’ll just add it to the list.
For a start, 24x30 will do just fine!!!
I also had a look at Thomas R.’s (clack) site; he’s got the whole process laid out there. :D
Best wishes, Jutta

Hello Jutta,
Good luck – I’d definitely recommend you give call typy a go.
As all the harder-to-find materials (namely iron(III) oxalate, sodium citrate as a developer, and (if necessary) chromate for contrast control) are available from Wolfgang Moersch, the process is only marginally more complex. Admittedly, instead of washing and fixing, you need a few more sheets of paper. But the prints have a much finer detail as a result. Van Dyke looks rather crude in comparison.
Best regards,
Martin

Hi Martin,
Tips like that really give me hope!
Yes, the VanDykes would be about right for that. I was also planning to use them to take a few shots of an old castle (stone steps, walls, etc.). So your suggestion would be spot on :D
I’ll definitely give “trying out the Kallitypes” a go!
But first I want to mix up the chemicals for the Van Dykes, as I already have them.
I think that will also involve a bit of practice and getting a feel for it...
I’m sure I’ll still have questions about the calotype process...
Best wishes, Jutta

Wrong entry! Sorry

Hello Jutta,
We have the internegative film (i.e. the film Martin describes) in stock here up to 24x30.
The other one (which is only available up to 8x10 inches) is ADOX ORTHO, and this is not intended ‘for enlarging’ but rather as a recording medium or for contact printing.
We can supply larger formats from Maco/Rollei or source them on request with a lead time.
Best regards,
Mirko

Hi Mirko,
That’s quite interesting to start with, in the 24×30 size!
And the price too! :D
“We can supply larger formats from Maco/Rollei or source them on request with a lead time.”
Always good to know, thanks Mirko.
Best wishes, Jutta
