Hello!
After a long absence, I’m popping in again with a rather naive question:
As I find I have very little time for photography, I don’t have much exposed film that needs development. I’d prepared a bottle of A49 a while back… but well… how am I supposed to use it up before it goes off, with only three films every three to six months?!
For the lower-speed films, I’m using APH09 – especially as the CMS also produces beautiful grain in APH09.
Otherwise, I’ve settled on Neopane for the 400s – I like the general look and I reckon it’ll be available for a while yet :P
Now I just need a handy, easy-to-store developer.
I’ve been thinking of something like Ultrafin or similar; I don’t need a fine-grain developer, I just don’t want to end up with significantly more grain than a CMS 100 in APH :(
Thanks in advance for your tips.
Regards
Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,
I simply prepared my A49 with a little less water and then bottled it in Aponorm bottles from the chemist’s. I calculated the amount of water so that I only need to top up the contents of a bottle filled almost to the brim to the volume specified on the tin. So far, the long-term trial hasn’t produced any developer that’s gone off... Well, I don’t have a densitometer to check, but I’m happy with it.
Best regards,
Richard

Neopan 400 and Rodinal are a match made in heaven... ;-)
This is my go-to combination for medium format – great tonal range, lovely grain – and it’s replaced A49 as my standard developer for Neopan. I haven’t tried it with KB yet, though – but I reckon it’d be worth a go...

@Richard: I’ve also got some A49 sitting here, prepared and ‘stored’ using the same method as you.
My question: What’s the longest you’ve kept the preparation stored so far? (And still been able to use it afterwards...)

I usually use R09. The ‘richness’ of the developed film is exaggerated. Over-development and pushing: these are certainly not this developer’s strong points.
Otherwise, I recommend Ultrafin Plus 1+6 as a single-use developer. The opened one-litre bottle lasts me at least two years, even though the manufacturer’s instructions state a shorter shelf life.
