I bought a CanoScan 2700F film scanner at auction. When I look at the first scans, I can see vertical 'lines'. Not on all of them, but on most. Generally speaking, the quality of the scans seems rather poor to me.
So my question is: are there any other users of a CanoScan 2700F here?
What have your experiences been like? What scanning software do you use? ...
Well, as the scanner isn’t particularly good, I found this out shortly after buying it (if I remember correctly, in 1997 or 98); a friend of mine had bought one at the same time, and his is only slightly better.
The CCD used is extremely noisy compared to other film scanners; it’s hardly usable for negative densities, and even with negatives the noise is terrible: you can see it, for example, in the sky as a grainy pattern :D
In addition to the noise, there are streaks running in the scanning direction that even multiple scans with averaging can’t get rid of.
Neither problem improves with age, so I initially decided to use the scanner only for generating thumbnails or web images. But even for that, mine is now no longer usable, as the streaks and noise are barely masked by the actual image ;) I’ll be getting something usable soon, probably a Nikon Coolscan.
If I were you, I’d send the thing back straight away, as the scanner is barely usable for scanning. Besides, the seller probably knew how bad the 2700F is. In any case,
I won’t be putting mine on eBay, but will take it apart. I’ll use the light source to make myself a cold-light macro lamp, then the thing will finally be good for something useful :D
See you in a few days... Chris Z.
