Hello to all analogue enthusiasts,
My venerable Axomat 4 from 1978 (?) has a small drawer (approx. 7x7 cm) located above the negative stage and beneath the glass plate (which sits in front of the lamp). Could this be used for variable-contrast filters (despite its proximity to the lamp, even though there would be a fairly thick glass plate in between)?
I’ve always worked exclusively with fixed-gradation, but this would allow me to switch to variable-gradation.

Hi Uwe,
Exactly, you can use the drawer for graduated filters (that’s what it’s there for). You’ll probably just need to cut the filter sheets to the right size.
Enjoy "Wandel",

Thanks!
Can anyone explain the difference between the ADOX and Patterson filters (available from FOTOIMPEX)? Is it worth spending the extra money on the Patterson filters?

Hi Uwe,
Apart from what’s in the catalogue, I don’t know of any other differences either. I used to work with ADOX filters, though (they had a different manufacturer’s name on them :-) and they proved to be very good.
Since I’ve since given those away, I recently bought a set of Ilford filters. They’re good too.
My conclusion: no matter which filters you use, they do the job and differ only in their gradation. You have to try them out anyway, though, as the promised ‘consistent’ exposure times only refer to a single grey level.
Best regards,
Franz
