Why do CHS 50 roll films roll up after developing?

Hallo, ich habe jetzt zwei CHS 50 Rollfilme entwickelt und stelle fest, dass sie sich, anders als die Ilford-Filme, nach dem Trocknen sehr stark aufrollen....

Hello, I’ve now developed two roll films of CHS 50 film and have noticed that, unlike Ilford films, they curl up quite badly once dry. Is the backing material that thin? What can be done about it? And what does the website http://www.adox.eu/ADOX_Filme/ADOX_CHS_Fil...DOX_CHS_50.html mean by: "Please pre-soak roll and sheet films to ensure the gelatin supercoat is applied evenly!" ? Hi Eduard, They do indeed curl up more than other films. But if you weigh them down properly whilst they’re drying, they’ll flatten out nicely. You can use those little balls that you clip to the corners of tablecloths to stop them being blown away by the wind. Best wishes, CP

Hello Eduard, As someone who only occasionally develops film in the bathroom, this is how I dry my Efke/ADOX films: whilst the films are being rinsed, I leave the shower running for a while until there’s a nice, gentle mist in the bathroom. After washing, I hang the films in the shower cubicle using clothes pegs or a coat hanger. By the next morning, the bathroom is dry again and the films are perfectly flat and smooth. Just like in the old days :-) Best regards, Franz

The question is, is the curl already present in the base film – in other words, was it bent beyond its elastic limit when it was rolled up (or are there slow plastic changes taking place?) – or does the curl only develop during drying as a result of the emulsion shrinking? In the first case, you need to ‘unroll it in the opposite direction’ for a considerable time; in the second case, as Franz has already described, dry it as slowly as possible whilst keeping the film nice and taut. In my experience, the first case only occurs with developed films that have been stored rolled up for many years. Regards, Wolfgang

Thanks for the tip. Tomorrow I’ll have a shower after the development. And then I’ll hang the film in the shower. In the kitchen where I conduct the development, I’m not allowed to create a ‘light mist’. Incidentally, I do of course attach small weights to the ends of the film. Regards, Eduard

Hi Eduard, Little things like ‘door closed’, ‘fan off’ and ‘window closed’ go without saying, of course. What’s more, the mist naturally traps every last speck of dust. Very handy, too.
