Hello, I’ve inherited a Rolleicord and have no idea how to take photos with it properly, nor where best to sell it (is it even worth it? I’m in no rush to sell it, as it is a keepsake, after all). Perhaps you could help me out (I can’t make head nor tail of eBay and similar sites)....and where is the serial number located? Viewfinder lens: Heidoscop 3.2/7.5 Taking lens: Carl Zeiss Triotar 3.5/7.5 cm Model: Rolleicord II How much does a roll of film cost? Where can I get hold of it? How many photos can I take with it? Where’s the best place to get them developed? Are there any courses where I can learn all this before I end up breaking everything? Perhaps someone could answer a few of my questions? For example, how much these films cost, as well as the cost of development and printing (at least for black and white). You’ll need a medium-format film (120). Nice camera. It uses 120 roll film and produces 6×6 cm negatives, which means 12 exposures per roll. They still make these new: http://www.franke-heidecke.net/ A camera like this (FX) now costs around €3,200.00 The lens on your Rolleicord – the Carl Zeiss Triotar 3.5/75mm – is also very good. Hi Sara, I paid around 50 euros for my Triotar-Cord (pre-war model, in excellent condition). In my opinion, it’s not worth selling your camera; you’re better off taking photos with it. It takes 120 roll film; for instructions on how to load it and operate the camera, see the manual. You can either buy a copy from Lindemanns or search for it online and download it. Robert doesn’t have a manual for the II online yet, but he does have one for the V with modifications for the III. With a bit of ingenuity, that should suffice for the II for now. http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/rollei/rollei_manuals.htm I think the Triotar is a lovely lens. At wide-open aperture, it renders a soft image (this makes for better ‘classic’ portraits than any digital method), and from around f/8 it becomes razor-sharp. Best regards, Franz

About the lens: The Triotar is a three-element lens; it might be a good one, but it’s still just a three-element lens with all the drawbacks that come with that. Any four-element lens is far superior to it. Best regards Renate

To be realistic: if someone asks how to take photos with a two-lens camera, there’s really no point telling them about three- or four-lens setups. In this case, you should mention aperture, shutter speed and an affordable alternative to expensive manual light meters. First and foremost, however, you should recommend that, before taking photos with a Rolleicord, they get hold of a 35mm SLR from the 70s or early 80s and hand the film in at Schlecker. It’s a good thing that my hopes weren’t dashed by such ‘experts’ back then. :rolleyes:

Hi T.R. How can you make it so easy for yourself? Starting with an old 35mm SLR? It would have to be at least a Leica or a ROLLEI, then. Or did the others take proper photos too? But the quality must have been rubbish. Right? At the very least, a camera like that looks like nothing special. Joking aside. I think it’s great that someone is finally getting back to basics here. It’s advisable to focus on the technical fundamentals of photography rather than succumbing to the craze for brand fetishism and the obsession with accessories. Even the finest craftsmanship requires a certain amount of theory to begin with. There are so many lovely books for photography beginners available at reasonable prices... . In theory, you could even start today with an older digital SLR that can be adjusted manually. That way, you’ll immediately experience both success and failure. Apart from the issue of depth of field... but there are books for that too. If I hadn’t started out with my purely manual Fujica SLR back then, I still wouldn’t be able to do it today. At least the technical side of photography. Thank you.
