Hello! A while back, I managed to snap up an Opemus 5 with a colour head on eBay; it actually magnifies quite well. The only thing that puzzles me is: It doesn’t have a mixing chamber, but a condenser. Is that still the case with the Opemus 5, or should the one with the colour head also have a mixing chamber? Or is the mixing chamber right at the top of the head, where the light source is? Regards, Daniel

Hello Daniel, Which filter head is fitted? The Meochrom designed for the 5 series (you’re in luck – they’re quite rare) uses an integrating sphere to illuminate a diffuser screen. The condenser remains in the enlarger below this, so that the light isn’t quite so soft. No mixing boxes are required. You should, however, remove the diffuser plate from the filter drawer. So everything seems to be correct. Best regards, Franz

Hello Daniel, A colour head doesn’t necessarily have to have a mixing chamber; the three filter settings can also be mixed within the colour head itself. This is the case with Krokus, for example, where there is always a condenser beneath the colour head. Best regards, Wolfgang

Thanks for the quick replies. It looks like one of those heads with an Ulbricht sphere (see photo). Someone has already removed the diffuser from the filter drawer. When you don’t know much about it, you never really know whether you’ve bought a ‘tinkered-with’ unit or not. When I then read that at least the newer colour cameras use mixing chambers, it confused me a bit. Thanks again for your help!

Hi Daniel, There you go. When adjusting the filters, you should try turning them all right up to the max first and then back down to the desired setting. The repeatability of this Meochrom model is a bit... slow. No worries, it’s a decent bit of kit. I’ve got one of these myself and still really enjoy using it. When you get the chance, you should replace the lamp holder (it extends the bulb’s lifespan), grease the mechanism a bit (hands off the filters! A bit of dust on them won’t bother a soul), remove the ball and blow it out (that’s all it takes). Best regards, Franz

Hi Franz, I’ve noticed that about the adjustment too; the filters come out more easily than they go in – I’ve no idea how to describe it. I’ll swap the socket when the bulb needs replacing next time. Regards, Daniel
