Hello everyone!
Yesterday I managed to snap up a Meopta Magnifax 4 in mint condition, complete with Zipp, Zapp and accessories, at a really bargain price.
Unfortunately, I didn’t win the bid for the Meograde that was also on offer.
Here’s the thing...
The seller didn’t really know much about the device, which was being auctioned on behalf of a client...you know where :-). I drove over, picked everything up and was happy!
I still am. Definitely.
Whilst dismantling, cleaning and comparing it with pictures online, I noticed that the seller had given me the mounting frame for the Meograde. The Meograde’s body would certainly love to... so I’ll be returning that bit.
The only thing is, I can’t screw the cover, which houses the opal lamp, onto the condenser chamber, as the screws are obviously too short.
Long story short. A specific question for anyone who owns or sells such devices (Hello Mirko!!!)... “Are slightly shorter screws supplied with the Meograde?” I mean the long, chrome-plated screws (2 pieces) that are inserted from below through the condenser chamber and screwed into the internal thread of the lamp cover (or into the Meograde) at the top, so that both parts hold together.
I hope someone can help me out here.
Best regards
Sebastian

Sebastian,
The 4-series doesn’t have a ‘mounting frame’ for a Meograde.
Both the condenser housing and the Meograde form a single unit that is attached directly to the negative stage at the side using two black screws.
Unscrew them and swap the head.
It would be best if you could post a photo.
Regards,
Mirko

Hello Sebastian,
As Mirko already mentioned, there are actually two main components: the condenser system – filter drawers – lamp housing, and the Meograde head. However, your previous owner screwed the Meograde head onto the condenser system (for whatever reason). Could it be that, during this modification, the screws connecting the condenser box and the lamp housing were shortened?
Best regards,
Richard

Right... it's me again.
Thanks for your replies.
I've had a look at loads of pictures of the Magnifax online.
Now I realise what went wrong.
The previous owner had actually dismantled the Meograde instead of removing it from the enlarger.
He had loosened the two grub screws on the Meograde and left its frame attached to the condenser chamber. I returned the part to him.
The two long screws holding the chamber and hood in place were too short. They only fit the Meograde.
As I’m actually a trained metalworker, I made short work of it and simply made two new screws from a piece of threaded rod. In they went... done. The 60 pfennigs for the extra material were definitely worth it compared to the 30 euros for the whole unit. =) Happy!!!!
See you later.
