Hello! I’d like to get an old Meopta Opemus 5 up and running again and use my 50 mm and 80 mm Componon-S lenses with it. I have a question for Mirko: Does Foto Impex still sell lens mounts with an M39 thread for the Opemus 5? The ones listed on page 69 of the catalogue seem, according to the description, to be for the current models only. By the way: Is there/was there also a multigrade head (‘Meograde’) for the Opemus 5? And while I’m at it, one more thing (this has nothing to do with the Opemus): Are there any power cables for that sort of connection still available anywhere?

Andreas, Everything is available except for one issue: the circuit boards are sometimes too small to accommodate a 50mm lens without the lens hood getting stuck. However, there’s an older thread about this here on the forum. Have a look for the keywords “pot mode” and “hat mode”. Best regards, Mirko

Hi Andreas, Yes, there are. The right plug for it is an ‘old hotplate plug’ or ‘waffle iron plug’. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...netzstecker.jpg I was able to buy mine quite easily from the local electrician in the village. You’ll have to rig the cable yourself; they haven’t been sold ready-made for several years now. Or you could cannibalise your granny’s waffle iron. Best regards, Franz

Hello Andreas, Unfortunately, new plugs for this socket are no longer available. With a bit of luck, you might be able to find them second-hand. Many households still have them, but they’re often still in use because people still have old household appliances that require them. I don’t even see these plugs at flea markets. I can only advise everyone never to throw such plugs away. I managed to get hold of a plug for this socket at a market in Sofia (Bulgaria). They’re still relatively common there. However, the journey isn’t cheap and you need some insider knowledge to find the right market. Best regards Renate

As we said, we have everything listed above in stock. That includes the plug. Back then, we bought out the local electrical shop so that we could offer complete dryers. But then the Red-Green coalition came along with their laws to crush specialist retailers, and we had to pack it in as far as the second-hand trade in electrical goods was concerned (in competition with eBay, where these restrictions don’t apply). Obviously, an eBay seller doesn’t go to the trouble of offering everything complete – nor do they have to. But we’re happy to help out with these plugs while we still have stock (costing €8), because after all, every properly dried circuit board brings joy, and that in turn inspires you to make another one, and before you know it, you have to reorder paper :) Best regards, Mirko There is one exception to what I’ve said: there were never any multigrade heads for the 5 series, only colour heads, and we no longer have those.

Hello Mirko, Can you read minds? I actually need the plug for an old drying press (from VEB Foto-Galvano, Leipzig) and that’s why, for the first time, I’ve also included baryta paper in my current order – something I hadn’t dared to try before. Many thanks and best regards, Andreas

The DIY stores in our area (Toom, Max Bahr) couldn’t help me with this a while back. And the electrician also said that they didn’t make them anymore. I then bought an old iron on eBay for €1 and asked the seller to send me just the cable (to save on postage). All the best! Volker

Thank you very much for the useful tips. Actually, I don’t need the cable for an enlarger, but for a dry press made by VEB Galvano Leipzig (without wanting to go rummaging through the junk room to check right now). In any case, its connector looks exactly like the one in the picture posted back then. And surely this connector should be able to accommodate a cable with earthing contacts? I’m assuming that the surrounding metal oval acts as the earth connection. Best regards Max

Hi, I’ve just had a quick look in our wholesaler’s catalogue (I’ve got it on my desk at work, which is why I couldn’t do it from my sofa at home last night): The Bachmann hot socket is still listed, though with the note ‘Approved for export only’. From this, I conclude that I’m no longer allowed to install the part as new, as there are now more elegant hot plug combinations available. But I could probably replace a faulty appliance socket with it – I’d do that myself, after all, I did learn how to do it... This confirms Franz’s statement that any electrician can order the part. The price, however, is in the range that Mirko mentioned. Martin

Well, if a cable like that were to turn up in a shop in Berlin in the near future, I’d buy it there. For eight euros. Otherwise, Franz cfb_de has listed plenty of places to buy one. I thought the same – on one of my walks through the East, I’d surely come across an electrical shop that looks as though it’s been in business since before the fall of the Wall . So far, though, no luck. Looks as though all the East German shopkeepers have switched to running boutiques :-) In any case, I’m really grateful for the quick and expert help. Thanks Max
