Help! I urgently need some more Adox Polywarmtone Matt, but Retrophotographic has run out, so I was thinking of ordering some Forte PW Semimatt instead... it’s no secret that the wonderful Adox Polywarmtone is actually just a Forte. But as all the prints are from the same series, I absolutely need the same finish. My question: is what ADOX calls ‘matt’ and what Forte calls ‘semimatt’ identical, or is there a difference? Don’t worry, as soon as I need new paper again, I’ll buy ADOX again :( … it’s just that Retro only has glossy Adox in stock, unfortunately. But I need the paper by Monday. Simon

Simon, You can identify the correct finish by the Forte product codes. Baryt: PW, 14 = glossy, PW15 = matt PE: FPW-1 = glossy, FPW-2 = matt We stock both of these finishes in glossy and matt versions. Best regards, Mirko

I’d say PW 14 is glossy, PW 17 is semi-matt (‘luströ’), and PW 15 is matt :) But the strap on PW 17 is ivory… not chamois :P

So at least what’s referred to here in England as “semi-matt” is actually PW-15. I reckon PW-17 would then be called “Lustre” (without the accent :) ). Although Silverprint claims that Forte “only produces one version of matt”... Hmm. Hmm? Simon

PW 17 is almost the same matt finish as PW 15, but on ivory-coloured card. The surface is determined by the substrate, and slight variations occur due to the colouring. It’s just as Phillipe suggested: one person calls it chamois, another ivory; one describes the finish as simply matt, another as semi-matt, and a third as half-matt or even lustre. Although ‘lustre’ is actually usually what others call ‘pearl’... Best regards, Mirko
