Good morning, Can anyone help me with the dilution of the Foma blue toner? The English instructions say that you should dilute bottles A and B 1:1 with water. Then it says that you should dilute the mixture 1:2 with water. Am I right in thinking that you’re supposed to combine the diluted solutions A and B and then carry out another round of dilution, this time using a ratio of 1:2, on the ‘mixture’? Hi Martin, That’s exactly how I understood the instructions too. However, you should only prepare as much of the concentrate as you’ll use within a day; the working solution won’t keep for any longer than that. I tried the Foma blue toner once, but I wasn’t really happy with it. These days, I’d be more inclined to go for the Moersch product.

Hi Frank, Thanks for the "confirmation". It’s all described a bit vaguely. As far as I know, my supplier in Switzerland doesn’t stock Moersch toner, unfortunately. And to pay the delivery costs from Germany to Switzerland just for some toner... I’ll give it a go this evening. ;-) Regards, Martin

Do you need to pre-rinse the prints for blue toning, or do they go into the toner dry? [right][post="7726"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post][/right]

I have always pre-soaked the prints, and Tim Rudman recommends this regardless of the toner used (i.e. pre-soak even with toners that have a separate Bleach bath).

Hi Frank, I was just confused because the black and white magazine website says you should put the prints straight into the blue toner while they’re still dry. The glossy surface of the paper has suffered quite a bit and has become unevenly dull. I’ve read before that you should print images for the blue toner on matt paper. Would rinsing them again and finishing with a wetting agent bath help? Have you, or anyone else reading this, ever tried Tetenal’s cyan toner? I’m quite happy with their copper red toner. Hi Martin, In my case, the smooth surface of the Fomaspeed Variant III didn’t become dull, but the colour tone disappeared almost completely during the brief washing after toning. And with baryta paper, everything simply ran, especially the image areas. Making a blue toner and using it is probably not exactly straightforward. I’m not familiar with the Tetenal product.
