I've just picked up a Rodenstock Ysaron on eBay!
How many lenses does it have, and what do you think of it?

Hello Goldfinger,
What’s the focal length?

Hello,
The Ysaron is a four-element lens and is considered the predecessor to the Rogonar-S.
I once compared my 3.5/50 Ysaron (well, one of the two) with my EL-Nikkor 2.8/50N at a magnification of 17x. It was visibly out of focus.
I think at 18×24 cm (7.5x magnification) you’d need a magnifying glass to spot the difference; and that’s the scale at which you’d normally work with a 105 mm lens.
For comparison: I have two 80mm four-element lenses and compared them with a current Rodagon 4/80 and an older 5.6/80. At 11x magnification and f/11, the four-element lenses tend to be better.
So: give it a go and just use it.
Regards
Andreas

Hello Andreas,
I have nothing further to add to that. Although a 7.5x enlargement from a 6x9 negative does produce quite large prints.
