Hi, I’m interested in Adox films, but I’ve never conducted film development myself and I don’t currently have the facilities to do so. I’m from Finland, and commercial developers conduct black-and-white film development by hand. I’d like to know how well developers designed for modern black-and-white films, such as Kodak, Ilford, etc., work with Adox films in the 25–100 ASA range. I’m sure you can recommend developers specifically designed for ADOX films, but I’m simply interested in knowing what to expect. I hope to hear from you soon.

Don’t worry, there’s no such thing as developers made exclusively for ADOX films. I’m sure you’ll get decent results when you have your film developed. If your lab has more than one or two developers available (which I imagine they will, if they’re actually developing by hand), they’ll probably have Rodinal as well. And that’ll do the trick. I don’t have any statistical data on that, but it seems to me that Rodinal is the developer most commonly used for the CHSes, and rightly so. It’s foolproof, easy to use and yields brilliant results with these old-school emulsions. Another one that’s generally considered to work well with them is Tetenal Neofin Blaue (aka Beutler), but if they don’t have Rodinal, they won’t have that one either. Not sure how the CHSes get on with D76 or ID-11. ...anyone? Cheers Nils.

Hi, Thanks for your quick reply. I went to a local photo lab and they don’t stock Rodinal any more – apparently it’s to do with Agfa winding down – but they do have Tetenal Neofin Blaue developer. Thank you for your help.

If there was ever a developer made for Adox films, it must be Neofin Blaue. Willi Beutler created that developer in 1948 to get the best possible negatives from the then-new Adox films, and in my opinion it is still unrivalled.

That’s right. However, today’s Efke/ADOX films are quite different from the ones Neofin Blaue was created for. But still, Beutler is hands down the best choice for the 25 and 50 — if only it weren’t so damn expensive :P rocknroll Nils.

A very good combination for the Efke/ADOX 25 is Rodinal 1+100 Even better for this film is Tetenal Blue or the almost identical Amaloco AM50 developer. The latter is very popular for this type of film in the Netherlands. Best regards, Robert
