Hello! I’d like to buy an Agfa Rondinax 60 daylight developing tank so that I can load my roll films even in daylight. Does anyone have any experience with this canister, particularly with Rodinal? As the Rondinax apparently works in a similar way to a processor, except that you turn it by hand, I’m worried that I might end up with an edge effect. However, the original instructions list Rodinal in almost all dilutions. Many thanks in advance for your help! Julia

Hello Julia, The three Rondinax 60 owners I know now all treat the camera as a museum piece and have produced some wonderful telegraph wires with it during their developments. A tilting tank and a changing bag – that’s what my daylight equipment looks like. Best regards, Franz

Hi Julia, I picked one up myself – completely clueless – for four euros at a flea market. I then looked into it ‘over there’ on the forum and elsewhere to find out *what* I’d actually bought and what it’s used for, and received some enlightening answers (this one from Franz was one of them). Since then, the Rondinax, filled with old marbles and coins, has been doing a brilliant job as a stylish bookend. Best regards, Nils.

Hi Julia, I used to do it like this: close the windows as tightly as possible (blinds, curtains, etc.) and then curl up under the duvet. It worked. Regards, Wolfgang

Hi Julia, I think I need to stick up for Rondinax! I’ve been using it for a while now and have had very few bad experiences. The advantages: minimal chemical usage – 120 ml of solution is sufficient. To ensure you don’t fall below the minimum developer volume, stick to a Rodinal dilution of 1:25 (that makes 6 ml – 10 ml is recommended, but 6 ml always works; only 1:50 = 3 ml of chemical is too little). Loading in daylight is brilliant! No fingerprints on the film! I’ve never experienced telegraph wires. But note: pull the protective paper out slowly and evenly! Turn the cartridge switch slightly every now and then; this helps it lie flatter. Once the film has started to spread out, it’s usually already too late. Then you just have to go into the darkroom, carefully rewind the film with the paper back onto the original reel and wind it onto the spare reel. To prevent this from happening in the first place: only load films that have either been exposed in one go, or, for films that have been in the camera for a while, leave them on the reel for two days first. That is really the only general problem with the Rondinax: once a film has been tensioned in the camera for some time, it curls at that point. And then the film no longer lies flat in the cassette. Once it’s in, everything goes like clockwork. Position the clip with the tape in the centre. Loading still worked fine. Pouring takes longer than with the canister, so start 30 seconds earlier. By the way, the spout is so narrow that you can easily pour straight back into the bottle. No need for a funnel! Best regards, Rainer

I suppose I’ll have to speak up in favour of the changing bag. I’ve got a Duka, but I still often use the changing bag to reel in hand development so I don’t have to go down two flights of stairs to the basement. And it’s not that I’m bothered by any niggles, just convenience. Give it a go. You’ll need the bag sooner or later anyway. The larger version is preferable. Best regards Stefan
