What I like about Neutol (both NE and WA)
- strong characteristics
- very pronounced shadows
- can be diluted significantly, resulting in high yield
- highlights still appear in the tray even after a long time
- very beautiful tonality with Polywarmtone and Foma papers
I am looking for a replacement developer.
Thanks
Reinhard

I’ve never used Neutol NE myself – but the description sounds exactly like Tetenal Eukobrom to me.
I’ve always used Neutol WA up to now – but ‘hard characteristics’ doesn’t apply there...

Neutol is Agfa formula 113; I wonder how they would have abbreviated Neutol in the GDR – correctly with an N, and then ORWO/Calbe N113.

Doesn’t really apply to WA
- very pronounced shadows
is more a question of the paper
- can be diluted a great deal, resulting in high yield
- highlights still develop in the tray even after a long time
is also more a question of the paper
- very beautiful tonality with Polywarmtone and Foma papers
I’ve stocked up on quite a bit of NE and WA and stored it so that I can make do with it for a while yet, but what comes next...?
I might switch to Amaloco developer...
Best regards! Johannes

Hi there,
Why is everyone panicking about Neutol? As far as I know, Agfa chemicals are being produced again. What’s more, Wolfgang Moersch has some very interesting developers on offer. I’m currently testing Separol HE. I’m really impressed with the initial results. Now the developer just needs to prove how stable it is. And then there’s the excellent N113, which has already been mentioned here.

Hello Reinhard,
Both NE and WA are rolling off the production lines in Vaihingen every week. In other words: they’re producing the stuff and making so much of it that they have enough to sell.
Rodinal too – in fact, the entire range of truly important Agfa black-and-white products – has been back in production for several weeks now. And not even at eight times the price, though it may be sold in the US under a different name. Because: there’s someone there who was so clever they wanted to snatch the Rodinal trademark for themselves.
If that were to succeed, (ex-Agfa) Vaihingen would have to cut staff, because one of their most important markets would be killed off and they’ve only just learnt how to make Rodinal, NE, WA and a few other black-and-white products.
In plain English: 25 people out of work (out of just under 60 employees), production of black-and-white products (all of them, in fact!) ceases, and after that there’ll be no more NE or WA either. You can then thank a small American firm with German ownership based in the capital. This address here, for example, would be perfectly suitable for sending a message to the forum.
Best regards,
Franz

Hi Franz,
Since Rodinal is arguably the best-known flagship product from the former Agfa range, you’re probably right, unfortunately. I don’t understand why they felt the need to snap up the name Rodinal either. R09 is also a well-known name and an established product; it’s very similar to today’s Rodinal, but not identical. If someone were to sell R09 under the name Rodinal now, many people would only notice the difference once a few development sessions had gone wrong. That benefits no one; on the contrary, I see it more as a major loss of trust in both the brand name and the distributor. Besides, the money spent on the naming rights could surely have been put to better use, as nobody’s financial resources are likely to be that generous these days, given that every production run has to be pre-financed.

Hi Frank,
That’s why I’m a bit surprised, as nothing has happened in response to my post on the English forum.
I’m assuming that Mirko himself didn’t know anything about the move. Although: rodinal.de has already been snapped up, now that domains are so cheap. See

It’s a nightmare.
A high-street shop which, in my own experience, slams a 24x30 sheet of paper down on the counter despite having a printed list – instead of the requested (and unavailable) 30x40 size – and can’t even find what I’m looking for (this didn’t happen on the famously busy Saturday, but on a Wednesday)
The owner of a Berlin-based mail order business who, with all due respect, tends to put people off rather than attract them. Why all the constant whingeing about lack of margins and astronomically rising silver prices?
As a customer, that doesn’t really interest me; rather, it drives me to place my order elsewhere, where each item might cost a euro more – but at least arrives as ordered.
Domain and brand grabbing, without having the substance to actually manage it properly themselves.
For the price of countless domain collections, you could certainly afford a Saturday worker to bring some order to the shop and the dispatch department.
A customer who wishes to remain anonymous.
Best regards, with a request to the owner of this domain to complain a little less and do business properly.
Gast
I’d say JandC would be better off selling the proper Rodinal as Rodinal, rather than the R09. I’ve no idea what the owner was thinking; in any case, I find his approach rather odd and counterproductive.

Hello,
You can order Agfa Neutol Liquid WA from Nordfoto; they have it listed, and they usually remove Agfa products that are no longer available...
