At the moment, private individuals would be well advised not to order chemicals from mail-order suppliers, as the police might suddenly turn up at their door to search their home. The German judiciary – which appears to have completely lost its way and is utterly clueless about chemicals (a bunch of ‘humanities scholars’) – is tracking down these people via customer files on the basis of a blanket suspicion of explosives manufacture, presumably an anti-terror panic campaign launched by Mr Schily – who is constantly harping on about the threat of terrorism – ahead of the World Cup. Over 1,000 (!) young people with an interest in chemistry have already been searched, and charges are being prepared against many of them, simply because they bought such “highly dangerous” substances as acetone via mail order and left their address on the order form, instead of just popping down to the nearest DIY store.
