Hello!
I bought an Opemus 5 with a colour head at a bargain price on eBay; it has a diffuser plate (frosted glass plate) where the
swivel-in red filter would normally sit.
As this is positioned behind the lens, it doesn’t just soften the light, but softens the entire image.
Is this intended as a soft-focus effect?
Best regards,
Daniel

Hello Daniel,
The diffusion screen is designed to be used as a diffuser for exposure measurement with specific laboratory films (e.g. the Wallner Report).
- Determine the paper index
- Insert the negative, place the disc underneath
- Measure, remove the disc, insert the paper
- Exposure
This works more or less well. It works well for run-of-the-mill shots with average contrast range, but poorly in available light situations with a lot of black and little white. The method is also known as ‘integral measurement’.
Best regards,
Franz

OK, right, when I went to pick up the enlarger, I spotted an exposure meter – I think it was linked to an exposure timer?
The sales assistant had no idea; he’d never used one himself.
I’ll swap the diffuser screen for a red filter then.
Thanks for your reply.

Another practical use for this: for diffuse pre-exposure or 'flash exposure' (to bring out detail in the highlights when using hard negatives).

Hi Daniel,
Do you still have that diffuser disc, and could you spare it by any chance? I’m actually looking for one.
Best regards,
Matthias
