Great forum!! Finally, a lively discussion that isn’t just about megapixels and Photoshop... I stumbled across this place by chance and I’m really glad to be able to ask a few questions. I did quite a lot of black-and-white photography a few years ago, until it became inevitable to switch to digital. Mainly with a 6x7 camera and interchangeable lenses, and always quite lively subjects. I often used a small flash as a fill-in – reportage, you see. All the digital faff is really getting on my nerves at the moment, so a few weeks ago I dusted off my old kit. Unfortunately, I’ve had to realise that my favourite combination – “APX400 and Rodinal Spezial or developed in Rodinal” – has disappeared from the market, so I have to switch. As an alternative, I’ve tried pretty much every other classic 400 film and ended up with the MacoCUBE – it seems to feel quite at home in Supergrain. NOW I READ HERE: MACO IS CLOSING DOWN!!?? Just a rumour, or reality?? The only one I haven’t tested is the ADOX – as I find the EFKE too fast on the emulsion and I thought both had identical base layers. :angry: I’ve learnt my lesson. Where should I place the Adox400? - More like HP5 or TRI-X, rather soft or neutral - Does the base curl, like Classic-Pan, for example - If PE, could I also develop it as a slide like MacoCUBE - Classic grain but not too distinctly ‘APX’ or artificial ‘delta’ grain It’s also necessary to number the film sections. I’d need to be able to distinguish the negatives using the numbers on the film. All in all, what are your experiences!!! Regards, Dirk

That’s not true. We can still supply APX 400 film for a few more years if you like, and should A&O stop producing Rodinal, we have ADOX APH 09 in stock. We also have Rodinal Spezial in stock. You can order both. What’s in the CHM 400 should actually be clear from the catalogue text. Where does it say that MACO is closing down?? You can safely dismiss that as an unconfirmed rumour for now. All films are numbered. Even profile films. It just doesn’t always start the first frame with 1. For example: 78, 79, 80, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Best regards, Mirko

Hi, Maco certainly won’t be closing down any time soon, unless they go a bit overboard with their marketing claims. Even then, the CUBE 400c will still be available (though perhaps on a different backing) under a different name. However, it will likely only be available in rolls of at least 30 metres, so you’d have to cut it to size yourself. The APX (100 and 400) is still available as end-of-line stock. It’s also available under the name Rollei Retro (100 and 400). That name is likely being used to sell the last batch Agfa produced. The 100-speed version in particular is said to be very well made, so it’s worth buying the Retro 100 if you like the film. You can guess what’s inside the CHM 400 if you know it’s produced in England. Furthermore, in the next thread over, people are currently discussing whether there’s a difference between the CHM 400 and the HP5+...

The fact that the APX is now marketed as ‘Rollei-Retro’ or something like that is actually quite amusing. I wouldn’t have been surprised if it had been doing the rounds as ‘Voigtländer-Pan’. Still, thanks for the tip. The ADOX business turned out to be a non-issue. I could have worked that out myself, as these days you find all sorts of things in the cassette, just not what’s written on it. I even spotted a PERUTZ somewhere a while back. I’ve still got about 30 efkeR25 in the fridge for special occasions, No. 210596 – plus 20% in development (Rodinal), I’ve read; is that about right? No, just the last batch of Adox CHS 50 roll film! Nothing else was developed in such a botched manner. Voigtländer had a film factory before the Second World War – I can’t remember if it was in Berlin or Braunschweig – and so did Zeiss-Ikon.
