Hello film collectors,
You’ll need to approach this in a focused way, so I’d suggest drawing up a plan. As Oleksander said: a phone call is always better than an email. That’s the case in Germany, and even more so in the Eastern Bloc. I assume you can speak Russian. It’ll be difficult without it.
As well as the film manufacturers and optical factories mentioned by Oleksander – which you’ve already written to, even if you haven’t called them yet :) – I’d suggest getting in touch with reputable repair and tuning services for Eastern Bloc cameras, such as Gevorg Vartanyan of Arax in Kyiv (
http://www.araxfoto.com , a very nice man who replies to emails quickly and willingly) and the virtually legendary Oleg Khalyavin in Yoshkar-Ola, Republic of Mari El (900 km = one night’s train journey east of Moscow; http://www.okvintagecamera.com). Both know their way around the industry very well and can probably put you in touch with contacts at Arsenal or KMZ if you show an interest.
At Arsenal in Kyiv (http://www.zavodarsenal.kiev.ua/?lan=&id=_1_3, the website is still wishing everyone a happy 8 March), you can arrange factory tours. If you do organise one, do let me know – I might be in Kyiv at the end of July and would be happy to join you if the timing works out B)
