I read in the FOTOIMPEX catalogue that A&O intends to sell Rodinal developer at eight times the previous price. What’s the reason for that? They certainly won’t sell many that way. I can’t believe that’s actually true?

Hi,
I haven’t seen any Rodinal manufactured by A&O in shops yet. Let’s wait and see how much it actually ends up costing. If it really does turn out to be that expensive, we can always complain or switch to an alternative product. The reason for this is simple: they want (and indeed need) to make a profit on production. Also, bear in mind that you can develop at least 50 films with half a litre of Rodinal.

Why not try R09? I haven’t noticed any difference compared to Rodinal. But as R09 is so dark black, I’ve stuck with Rodinal so far, given that they’re similar in price. If it were just 50% more expensive, I’d go for Calbe-Chemie.

The price issue is easy to explain.
We used to have a reliable supplier who offered competitive prices.
When Agfa’s distribution company went bust, all those terms and conditions were scrapped for all these suppliers.
A&O is still finding its feet in this new market and is cautiously testing the waters. The headwinds are blowing with sharpness from all sides, so they’ve immediately retreated and are now offering products at the old Agfa Germany dealer prices for the time being.
Apart from Foto Kleckermann in Kleinpoppelsdorf, however, no one has been sourcing from Agfa at ‘standard’ dealer terms.
They will very soon realise that they cannot settle anything at these prices and will have to bring the price down to a level that allows us to offer competitive prices compared to similar products from other manufacturers (who on earth buys Neutol NE at €12 a bottle??).
It doesn’t have to be as cheap as it was before Agfa went bust, but eight times the price is a bit excessive. We need to find a middle ground somewhere.
In the medium term, however, you’ll certainly be developing your films with Classic F09, ADOX APH09 and their equivalents at more attractive prices.
However, as long as Agfa’s remaining stock is still floating around the market, we simply cannot list it at €12, which is why we have started to delist it for the time being.
Best regards,
Mirko
