Hi,
I don’t know if anyone is familiar with Sebastião Salgado and his photographs. I’m very interested in what he uses to achieve those contrasts. I think he uses Trix film, but I’ve no idea what he uses as a developer for the film and paper. I love the grain that appears in his images. Does anyone know what he uses, or perhaps his printer (I don’t think he develops the photos himself)?
Kind regards,
David

When it comes to questions like this, why not just ask the photographer themselves?

Yes, Salgado is absolutely top-notch –
I think you’re spot on with the Tri-X –
I reckon Tri-X at 800 ASA, developed normally (no push processing) using a standard developer like HC 110, D 76 or Rodinal – where he takes his photos, people hardly bother with any special developers; you might want to increase the temperature from 20 to 22 °C to boost the contrast, as his subjects usually have a standard contrast
– let me know if you manage to get anything out of it
Best regards,
Frank

Salgado (whom I know personally) has his own printer (Dominique Granier).
He uses TX and TMZ for small format, and TXP (A49 1+1) for medium format. His films were developed by Philippe Bachelier: see *Réponses Photo* and the rescue operation for 220 films on this forum!
Didier Carré used to handle the film development (Tetenal Ultrafin Plus), then Ph. Bachelier, and now he’s back at Imaginoir (Jean-Yves Bréand, Jeanloup Sieff’s printer) (development in self-mixed D76 1+1)...

It would obviously be great to ask the photographer himself, but I don’t have his email address or phone number.
