Ralph, I’m from Kyiv in Ukraine, so the market is a bit different there. If you only want films that are available in Germany, then that’s fine too. Academy 200 is a Kodak film manufactured in China and very inexpensive; I think it’s only available in Eastern Europe. The Swema films you have are all cinema films; they’re sold in 60–300 m rolls. Others have the prefix FOTO or FN; Reporter is also available very cheaply in cassettes. Hello Phillip, Unfortunately, my German isn’t very good, I’m not actually from Kiev itself but from near Kiev. I get the films from a photographer, but I’ll try to find out where there are good suppliers in Kiev (though with Swema, Tasma and Slawitsch, quality is always a bit of a hit-and-miss). Otherwise, you’ll just have to ask in photo studios if they’ll sell you any. Oleksander

Hello Oleksander, Your German is excellent. There are plenty of Germans who write worse than you. Since you can’t expect top quality when buying Slawitsch, it’s obvious... Getting hold of things through studios and the like is possible, but it can be quite a faff until you’ve got the items you’re looking for. In the Eastern Bloc, it’s usually the case that the best way to get hold of things is through contacts, and that, if in doubt, it can involve a fair bit of legwork until you’ve found someone who can get the items for you, especially if you’re looking for something unusual. I’d actually asked my in-laws to look into Swema films, but as they live in a village near Dnipropetrovsk, sourcing them was a bit of a faff. If you could find out who’s best to contact in Kyiv, I’d be grateful; if in doubt, have a go and ask your photographer :D If in doubt, do send me an email [reichmuth (at) web . de]; Russian is fine too – my Russian’s actually quite passable these days. Phillip, When I say ‘good sources’, I mean that although many retailers do stock photographic paper, sometimes they have Fohar, then Forte, then Slawitsch, or perhaps they only have two types in stock. And when you actually need something, there’s nothing in stock, or only the wrong size. You’ve seen how my search for Swema narrow-gauge film went. I simply can’t tell you right now whether anyone will have the film in five months’ time, or who might have it. Oleksander

Well, that’s why all the running around is necessary. Especially when you’re abroad, you basically need a photographer or retailer whom you can tell and pay in advance what you need, and who will then put the items in stock as soon as they arrive, until you can collect them. Phillip, I was in a photography shop in the city centre this evening – the one that always stocks those "Soviet" photo products. They said that Swema might be back in stock, but Tasma and Slawitsch have been replaced by Forte for the time being. I don’t know if there’s still an importer for Russian photographic products; because of the natural gas issue, people aren’t particularly keen on the Russians, and you’re starting to see that on the shelves. Swema still prefers to supply Russia, though; the rouble is better money. I’ll have a look around; maybe, if I’m there, I can give you something from my darkroom. There’s also a Ukrainian photography forum; you could ask there if anyone knows where to find what you’re looking for. Oleksander PS: I think you’d be better off going to Moscow; it’s easier there :) .
