In another thread here (Orwo darkroom lamp), the topic of ‘photographic paper datasheets’ and the wavelength of darkroom lighting was raised. This has also been of interest to me for some time, as I’d like to replace the bare, painted light bulb with a more elegant solution in the form of LEDs. Their data sheets specify their wavelengths; for “red”, for example, this is 625 nm and for “red-orange” 615 nm. Now I’m looking for the corresponding section in the data sheet for my photographic paper, but the problem is that I can’t find a data sheet at all for the photographic paper I’m currently using. The only information I can find about the “Vario Classic PE” is this. It’s a bit sparse, and it looks a bit slapdash; what’s presumably meant to be a table looks rather mangled in my browser (Firefox). Is there more information available elsewhere?

We’ve covered this on several occasions elsewhere. However, I couldn’t find it straight away using the search function, so here’s a brief recap: We cannot provide a specific nm value because we do not consider this to be useful. The advice is: carry out a veiling test with your lighting and, if in doubt, use Phillips red light bulbs. The paper’s sensitivity varies slightly depending on the batch. The nm range would therefore vary. The darker the red, the more reliable; the lighter, the less reliable. Furthermore, no paper is completely insensitive to red, and all lamps also emit residues of other colours. Otherwise, one could simply expose the paper to red light for hours on end under bright daylight conditions, or finally see something in the lab when using coloured paper and LED lighting... All in all, it becomes too complex for a preliminary calculation. The best approach is to experiment. The redder, the better. So if I wanted to make my own LED lamp, I’d buy two or three LEDs ranging from as red as possible to a light orange and test them out. Best regards, Mirko

... you don’t need to tinker around to get LED lighting. You just need to spend about 10 euros. For that, you can buy a red LED bulb that screws into a standard E27 socket – a 220V solution. Simply swap it for your existing incandescent bulb (available from Conrad, Reichelt, etc.). Bright, doesn’t get hot, uses hardly any energy, lasts almost forever. Described by many users (including on other forums) as a perfectly viable replacement, though without specifying wavelengths. It’s worth a try. Regards, Ronald
