I’ve got a question about paper drying. There are loads of presses available for baryta paper, and second-hand ones are reasonably affordable. What about drying RC paper? I’ve found machines from Jobo and Kindermann, among others, but they’re all so expensive that it’s highly uneconomical to buy them. The price range starts at over 600

Hi Peter, There is a device like that for RC drying: the Leifheit RC dryer. You can find it a bit cheaper at your local supermarket; the housewife will be pleased to have an added bonus when it’s not being used as an RC dryer. A piece of string stretched across the kitchen is enough for my prints. The repurposed specialist device is kept outside. And then, for small formats, there are also occasional continuous-feed dryers or hot-air blowers available on ePay. Keywords: Durst FRC, Durst UT or those from Ilford, Kaiser or Kindermann. The Leifheit solution has proved itself to be practical for me. As I said: I hang my PE prints on a piece of string, though. SCNR, Franz

My problem is that we’re using a lab of about 12 square metres with 10 people. (Not all at the same time, of course. There isn’t even enough space to set up the “Leifheit RC dryer” in there. We’ve got a Durst FRC 400 standing around, but it’s so rusty and worn out that it’s no longer usable... Let’s see if it’s worth buying one in a more acceptable condition.

You can often pick up a Durst FRC-400 or a Durst hot-air dryer/Rowi-Kindermann IR second-hand for around €100.00. This allows you to dry PE/RC prints up to 30 x 40 cm with no trouble. Always keep an eye on the rollers, as they tend to wear out. Replacement parts are expensive with Kindermann. Best regards, Robert

PE can also be dried using a dry press, with the paper facing the cloth; you simply need to place an absorbent cloth between the hot surface and the paper. Please note the maximum drying temperature for the specific type of paper. Best regards, Wolfgang
