Hi!
Are the emulsions of the two ADOX papers, Easy-Print and VarioClassic, identical apart from the base?

Hello Jörg,
May I ask what your question is based on?
Before I answer ‘yes’, please bear in mind:
1) Under no circumstances should you carry out exposure tests with PE and then expect the results to apply to baryta paper.
2) PE paper has less emulsion per square metre because the coated base is less absorbent – therefore, it requires less light and less development time, and has less depth of tone and a narrower tonal range.
3) The image tone is achieved through a mixture of white and black, except in the case of deep blacks. With PE papers, the white is that of the plastic base, whereas with baryta it is that of the baryta coating.
Therefore, you can never hang both side by side and expect them to look the same.
Conclusion: In principle, yes, but it doesn’t matter as the paper behaves differently anyway; the only comparable aspect is its behaviour under darkroom light (veil test).
Best regards,

The reason is the longer development time. I just wanted to know whether I need to leave the PE paper in the developer for 3 minutes, like the Baryta paper.
I’m currently trying out your ‘tot-matt’ paper. It takes some getting used to... but it’s already making a good impression. I’m still finding it difficult to get the Baryta paper to come out flat, though.

Unfortunately, that’s just the way baryta papers are when it comes to drying.
Development times for PE are slightly shorter due to the lower silver content.
Actually, though, you should be asking: ...whether I’M ALLOWED to develop the PE for as long as the baryta :-)
You can stop at any time after 90 seconds if you like, and you’ll get a result similar to that on papers with a lower silver content, but the longer it stays in and the more it ‘develops’, the better your picture will be :)
Best regards,
Mirko
