Hello, Can all baryta papers be processed using a dry press? I recently read that cross-linking of the emulsion is important. Are there actually papers that are too delicate for a dry press? I’ve never used a dry press before; I’ve always air-dried my prints, so I don’t have any experience with this issue.

Good morning! So far, I’ve tested ADOX FinePrint VarioC and Polywarmtone. The Polywarmtone withstands relatively high temperatures and produces little curling at the edges. The Vario paper is unsuitable for my dry press because it curls extremely badly, even at low temperatures. Air-drying makes it almost flat; that’s the best I can manage. I’ll soon be pressing it onto a glass pane and leaving it to dry there. Regards, Jü

Drying in the press is a bit of a black art anyway; my prints sometimes come out wavy, sometimes smooth, and I can’t figure out what’s going right and what’s going wrong. That’s why I now only dry small prints in the press. As far as the emulsion is concerned, however, most of the ones I’ve tried work: Fomabrom, Fomatone, Polywarmton, Polykaltton, Fortezo, and Kentmere VC Fineart can all be dried in the press. However, there are apparently some papers whose emulsion sticks and which must under no circumstances be put in the press: Kentmere Kentona and Retrophotographic Printing-Out-Paper must be air-dried.
