The Fomabrom Variant is here!
Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to test it yet due to a cold and my birthday, but the pictures from Foma look good.
It could be a decent replacement for MCC.
Prices will be in the catalogue soon – you can already buy it, and the girls already have the prices in their systems.
It’s not as expensive as Fomatone but slightly more expensive than Fomabrom Fixed Gradation.
Best regards,
Mirko

Great! It’s a shame Philipp’s just picked up my winter order – unfortunately, ordering a pack to the Netherlands costs more than buying the same amount of Kentmere from the shop here ;) Has anyone tried making lith prints with Fomabrom Variant?

Why don't you list the standard packs and their prices here (8x10"/24x30/18x24)... I'm just finishing off an order ;-)
Best regards

Jörg,
I can’t do that until Monday.
Samuli,
We charge a flat rate of €10 for deliveries to the Netherlands.
From February, there will also be a duty-free allowance (€200) for the Benelux countries and France.

Mirko,
Will they still be selling those small packs of 25 sheets, or will Foma be stocking boxes in the near future?

Good question!
After eight years, our pleas have finally been heard regarding Fomaspeed Variant and Fomatone: we’ll be getting proper packaging again!!!
Can you see into the future?
That was only decided this morning, after all :-)
Of course, they’ve left Fomabrom Variant out of it for now. But I’ve already submitted a proposal for a new product – let’s see what the comrades at the plant in Hradec have to say... not that it’ll take another eight years to get it through...
Best regards,
Mirko

That was quicker than I thought!
The prices for the Fomabrom Variant are in the
catalogue.

That sounds good; these packs of ten get really annoying after a while...

Belated happy birthday!

Hello Mirko,
In my opinion, the most important question hasn’t been asked yet.
What is the colour rendering like?
If it’s like the Festgr. Fomabrom, it tends to have a very cool tone,
so how is it supposed to be an alternative to the MCC?
Can you say anything about the tone, what direction it takes and
where it fits in with your current papers?
(I’ve already read the description, but I can’t quite picture it)
Thanks, Stephan

Hi Mirko,
In my opinion, the most important question hasn’t been asked yet.
What’s the image quality like?
And the weight is interesting. 185g is more like paper than card. I’m only familiar with the MCC in card weight. Will the Foma paper also be available in this weight?
Regards, Jü

Stephan, Jörg,
The image tone will be slightly warmer as the Fomaspeed Variant emulsion has set.
The base is definitely the same as that of the Fomabrom.

Mirko

Philipp and I made two prints on Fomabrom Variant last night, and we’re very pleased with them. At first glance, it looks very similar to Fomabrom Festgradation (which only appears cool in certain developers), and I really like it. We developed them in N113, which gives the paper a slightly warm tone – even a tiny bit warmer than Fomaspeed Variant. The exposure time can be roughly carried over from Fomaspeed Variant, but that’s not enough for fine-tuning; the papers are simply too different for that. The base is cardboard-thick and pleasant to process, as always with Foma.
Kudos to Foma for good paper and to Mirko for making sure we can actually get hold of it!

Will Fomabrom Variant ever be available in a matte finish? Or is the market too small for that? I like the matte version of Fomabrom Festgradation, but my negatives are too unevenly exposed, which means I can’t get a lot of them to look right on Festgradation.
MirkoBoeddecker
Yes, if sales go well, anything is possible.
First we’ll make some money with Fomabrom Glossy, and then we might invest that money in a run of the matt version as well.
I’m afraid, however, that the fixed-grade matt version will then be discontinued to balance things out, as the market is too small for both.

Mirko

Mirko, do you know when the matt version of the Variant will be available?
And the 542 (Chamois) finish for the Fomatone MG?
One more question: how can I order the PW17 (Ivory)? I can never find it in the catalogue :(
MirkoBoeddecker
Fomabrom Variant matt is now in stock, with the exception of a few sizes.
We can order Fomatone 542.
PW 17 is available in 30x40 cm.
We will need to order other sizes.
The price is the same as for PW14 or PW15.
Best regards,
Mirko

... Oh my, they actually make Chamois paper?! I thought it had gone out of production …
I suppose I’ll have to give Impex a ring :(
MirkoBoeddecker
Simon,
We stock the Foma chamois (very yellowish) and the PW17 (slightly cream-coloured).
However, we don’t have much in stock – you’ll usually have to wait a while for us to get it in.
Best regards,
Mirko
